This paper aims to investigate the disconnect between the rhetoric of diversifying museum staff and the actions taken to put any remedial efforts into practice. This paper uses the recent controversial Brooklyn Museum hire of a white curator of African art considering both evaluations of museum staff demographics and scholarly research on racial justice. More specifically, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation 'Art Museum Staff Demographic Reports' from 2015 and 2018 establish a baseline while arguments of Critical Race Theory (CRT) enable a historical contextualization of core reasons for the persistence of inequality in institutional settings in the United States.
