The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore caregivers' lived experiences of managing their adolescent's asthma. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews examining four mothers' experiences including symptoms, treatment, management, and who they relied on for support. Three main themes emerged, including: (a) responsibility for asthma management; (b) feelings of uncertainty; (c) need for support. Results indicated that the mothers expressed their adolescent striving for independence and managing their condition simultaneously. Additionally, the mothers stated that they themselves and their adolescents felt uncertain when managing asthma because of how the symptoms affected their daily lives. The results also showed that managing asthma involves the entire family unit. This study brings awareness to the need for more communication between the family and medical providers so adolescents feel successful managing their asthma. Child Life Specialists can prepare and educate adolescents and their families about asthma in ways that they would understand in order to successfully manage and gain the independence that adolescents are striving for.
