Many theorists indicate learning is a social process, so how is social activity encouraged in an online learning environment where there is no physical contact with the instructor or the students? How does a community of learners evolve from a group of independent individuals who participate in an online class? Can we observe the community building and create collaborative projects in these settings? This practicum observes an online course in action and identifies behaviors that illustrate community and collaboration developing over time. After observing and collecting data of an active online course, the data illustrated that community and collaboration occurred effectively within the course and enabled a complex collaborative project to have successful outcomes. Challenges in managing these were also identified. The analysis helps identify design strategies that contribute to collaborative online learning environments. Online course developers gain insight into effective strategies that if used can enhance collaborative learning environments.
