Chugach Optional Elementary School, located in Anchorage, Alaska, is the original version of a thriving local alternative public school model developed by parents and educators in the 70s. This model does not have a teacher education school or certification program, but does have a distinctive student-centered philosophy utilizing alternative curriculums. This action research project studied the Optional philosophy and methodology to learn about effective curricular design methods. The investigation begins with a history of alternative education, which led to the founding of Chugach, as well as the model's philosophical underpinnings. The chosen methodology, as the researcher was an active participant, was action research utilizing a reflective journal, empirical research, and consultations with veteran Optional teachers. The findings of the study included a firmer definition of the student-centered and integrated Optional philosophy, the discovery of resources valuable for Optional teachers, and examples of how teachers can implement the model effectively. The implications for learners, teachers, curriculum, and governance prove useful for parents, teachers, or administrators interested in alternative public education models, particularly the Optional model developed in Anchorage, Alaska.
