This study explored the experiences of Anglo coaches coaching individuals from cultures outside their own. The participants were English-speaking individuals, born in the United States, and of the American culture. The qualitative, holistic, single case study used interviews with 12 participants who were experienced in coaching individuals from other cultures. All 12 participants were members of professional coaching associations. The coachees, or individuals being coached, were either immigrants (the first generation born outside the United States) or children of immigrants (the second generation born in the United States). Data collected from in-depth interviews with each participant indicated that cross-cultural coaching could have many benefits to the coachee and the coach; however, cross-cultural coaching can also have many challenges. The six themes that emerged from the data collected include (a) cross-cultural coaching context from the Anglo coaches' perspectives, (b) coaching approaches-U.S. culture versus outside the U.S. culture, (c) Anglo coaches' characteristics for coaching individuals from other cultures, (d) challenges of coaching individuals from outside the United States, (e) benefits of coaching individuals from outside the United States, and (f) strategies for overcoming the challenges of cross-cultural coaching. The study expands the coaching literature from two different perspectives: (a) the cross-cultural coaching dynamics and (b) the strategies of overcoming the challenges of cross-cultural coaching. The findings from this study provide additional guidance to coaching in a cross-cultural context.
