This study identifies a Division II collegiate athletes' preference of coach gender regarding the leadership styles utilized by their coaches. All IUP affiliated athletic teams were asked to participate in this study. The Leadership Scale for Sports (preferred version), developed by Chelladurai, P. & Saleh, S.D. (1980), was used in this research.Composite scores were found for each of the 5 subscales in the survey. Using the subscales, independent samples t-test were used to compare gender, gender of current coach, and having had both male and female coaches in their athletic history. One-way ANOVAs compared results across class standing, sport played, and preferred gender of coach. There was one statistically significant result: Autocratic Behavior was different between sports. However, post- hoc tests did not find any significant pair-wise differences between groups. Two-way ANOVAs were used on each subscale item by gender and preferred coach gender. There were no statistically significant differences found.Future research should consider using a larger sample size with equal amounts of both genders. It is also suggested that a different level of sport be surveyed, for example, Division I, professional leagues, or even high school.
