High school community service programs are growing in popularity to increase prosocial behavior in teens and to fill an increasing competitive demand for volunteers in nonprofit organizations. The efficacy of these high school community service programs is debatable. The study sought to identify a relationship between teen student satisfaction with the high school community service experience and volunteer attitudes and motivations in adulthood. Using the theory of planned behavior, a quantitative, retrospective analysis was conducted with a sample of 60 adult volunteers who had participated in community service activities while in high school, drawn from a population of high school graduates over the age of 25. The sample was primarily middle class women with bachelor's degrees, aged 41 to 50 years old. A corollary analysis was conducted using the Volunteer Satisfaction Index for high school volunteer satisfaction and Volunteer Functions Inventory for volunteer motivation in adulthood and the Helping Attitudes Scale for volunteer attitudes in adulthood. Findings indicate an insignificant correlation between satisfaction with high school service experiences and adult volunteer motivations, and a significant correlation between satisfaction with high school service experiences and adult volunteer attitudes. Participants who completed service as a requirement to graduate were shown to have more positive correlations between satisfaction and motivation, and satisfaction and attitudes compared to participants who did not have a graduation service requirement. Future research separating the volunteer functions can provide additional information to educators about the most effective ways to design high school service programs to instill long lasting prosocial behavior.
