Pilates, formerly known as Contrology, is an established set of exercises created by Joseph Pilates to strengthen the body-mind connection in order to actualize optimal physical fitness, mental well-being, and spiritual nourishment. There is no known research representing Pilates as a somatic psychotherapy or linking Pilates to a depth psychological perspective. A hermeneutic, heuristic, and intuitive inquiry approach is directed at exploring the theoretical application of the Pilates Method matwork principles with the goal of contributing to the evolution of Pilates as a somatic depth psychotherapeutic modality. Providing personal anecdotal accounts from the author's implementation of Pilates matwork, this thesis advocates for the importance of honoring the unique process of the individual psyche in exploring and reconciling with self, other, and community. Directions for further research and discussion are offered to inspire growth in the community of somatic psychotherapy.
