Literature clearly indicates that early literacy intervention and instruction in English, a home literacy environment that fosters young ESL students' developing literacy skills, and oral English development throughout childhood supports English language learners' acquisition of literacy skills and that oral English development supports students' ability to comprehend texts. Since oral English language skills lead to reading comprehension, I investigated whether reading and discussing books or stories with family members (sent home by the teacher with the student) leads to an increase in oral English skills using the causal-comparative method. I used convenient criterion sampling because I studied 5th grade ELLs at one particular school, Rutherford Elementary. I used the Student Oral Language Observation Matrix (SOLOM) to measure growth, and t tests to determine whether the number of minutes reading and discussing texts at home significantly affects or causes an increase in a student's oral English development. Results indicate that students who reported reading more showed more growth than students who read less.
