This study was conducted to determine if the English as a Second Language (ESL) ReadingSmart program can assist English Language Learner (ELL) teachers and schools to improve student's reading achievement scores. There has been a steady increase in the English Learner (EL) student population in schools. As such, the reading gap between newcomer EL students and those EL students who have been in the United States for more than one year has also risen. The overall effectiveness of the ESL ReadingSmart program on newcomer EL students' reading scores and the effect of the reading score gap on standardized tests with their EL cohorts who have been in the United States for more than one year were examined in this study. The ESL ReadingSmart program was used by EL students at a junior high school located in a diverse suburb of a major city in the Midwest. This study was a quasi-experimental design using newcomer students or students with a reading score of under 2.0 on the ACCESS test. The ESL ReadingSmart program was used in conjunction with the students' EL classes. The results showed use of the ESL ReadingSmart program did increase student's reading achievement scores based on significant differences found in the data analysis in this study.
