When implementing stormwater infrastructure in urban watersheds, determining the contributing drainage area of a site is a major factor in designing the loading conditions of a system. This research consisted of an urban watershed delineation study examining the effectiveness of using different resolutions of digital elevation models (DEMs) to determine an optimum resolution for accurately delineating drainage basins in an urban landscape. Potential correlations between site-specific factors (such as percent imperviousness and land use) and the effectiveness of certain Light Detecting and Ranging (LiDAR) resolutions in delineating urban watersheds are investigated by applying the research procedure to three sites in Villanova and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.This research investigated the optimum DEM resolution, which could save money and time for future watershed delineations and green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) placement in urban areas. The results of the field measurements and LiDAR-based watershed delineation provide conclusions that a resolution of DEM of 1- to 3.2-feet (0.3- to 1-meter) best delineate urban watersheds, while resolutions of 5.0-feet (1.5-meter) or greater do not adequately illustrate the complex catchment systems of the urban landscape. This study also examined the effectiveness of GSI implementation in an ultra-urban setting in an ongoing field monitoring study. A parking lot redevelopment project is set to introduce multiple GSI systems in a low impact development student housing project. The study, being performed on Villanova University's campus, will assess the ability for GSI systems to be implemented over soil that was assumed to be highly compacted during its service life as a surface parking lot.
