What possibilities does a written text, through its choice of words, lyricism, and form, recognize or deny? In this thesis, I offer a close reading of the essays and fiction that Shimizu Shikin, a Japanese female writer and journalist from the Meiji period (1868 - 1912), produced between 1870 and 1890. During her fourteen-year career at Jogaku Zasshi, a magazine that was devoted to women's education and women's rights, Shikin wrote both fiction and essays to help improve women's positions at home and in the society. My goal in this thesis entails both to understand the perspective of life, that is, a woman's way of being, that Shikin communicates in her writings and how the two forms - the essay and the fiction - enables her to present that perspective of life in different yet related ways.
