Faith-based nonprofit organizations (FBOs) are facing increasing pressure to forsake their charter mission to adapt to financial challenges, societal pressure, and/or changing demographics. More and more, FBOs are being asked to abandon their Christian heritage and distinctiveness to maintain or secure funding. Therefore, mission drift is an ongoing threat for nonprofits. As a result, it takes strong leadership and deeply held convictions to continue to remain true to the organization's mission in the faith-based arena. The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine if there is a relationship between authentic leadership and mission alignment, as perceived by those working in faith-based, nonprofit child welfare organizations. Data were collected from 16 different FBOs throughout the United States. This examination of mission alignment in FBOs and authentic leadership was framed around follower perception. The participants rated perception of their leader's authentic leadership using a sixteen-item scale and perception of their FBO's adherence to the organization's mission using a twenty-item scale. Three hundred and forty-eight responses were analyzed using a Pearson r correlation coefficient statistic to determine the strength of the relationship between authentic leadership and organizational mission alignment. The study results showed that there is a significant positive relationship between authentic leadership and faith-based organizational mission alignment. This indicates that it is possible to meaningfully predict mission alignment by the degree of authentic leadership found in FBOs. These findings are encouraging for authentic leadership as a theory and useful for future studies on mission drift in FBOs.
