This qualitative study explored the career management perceptions, challenges, and expectations of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) Front-Line Leaders (FLL) within a professional services firm. Research, development, and technology capabilities are growing in importance across all sectors of the economy. It is critical for organizations to effectively manage and engage their STEM professionals. However, the way careers develop and are managed has changed dramatically over the last 30 years. The study entailed interviewing 35 STEM FLL to identify their career goals, challenges, supports, and needs. The study results indicate that STEM FLL are at a career crossroads that is conflicted by various external and internal factors. They value the impacts they have on others, but they are also looking to transition to new opportunities. STEM FLL can find it a challenge to identify what career opportunities exist, the best way to pursue them, and the right balance between technical and management responsibilities. Recommendations for individual STEM workers and organizations with STEM workers are identified.
