The counseling profession requires one to be emotionally cognizant for both the client and the counselor. Counselors have faced many stressors including burnout, client load, and duties assigned by their supervisor. These changes have contributed to feelings of burnout and leaving the counseling field at an alarming rate. This study looked at the relationship between leader member social exchange, burnout, a use of self-care for mental health counselors. Bronfenbrenner theory of ecological systems, social exchange theory, as well as transformational leadership theory, transactional leadership theory, and laissez faire leadership, social exchange theory framed the theoretical orientation of the study. In this quantitative study, 77 mental health professionals took three different surveys through SurveyMonkey. Results were analyzed using SPSS software to determine the relationship that was found between leader member social exchange, burnout, and use of self-care. The study proved that there is a direct relationship between all the variables. The issue of leader member social exchange, burnout, and self-care needs to be addressed throughout all mental health services. Implementation of training to promote self-care and effective leadership can reduce the rate of burnout that is seen in the mental health field. This research may result in training programs in addition to leadership courses being mandatory in positions of leadership. Research on these leader member social exchange, burnout, and self-care has been limited to the fields of nursing, social work, and medical agencies. Determining if a relationship is found will allow for further research to be conducted with leader member social exchange, burnout, and self-care with mental health counselors.
