This dissertation addresses one of the most important topics in the modern political economy - causes and consequences of corruption. I concentrate my attention around four major questions: the link between globalization processes and corruption, the effect of competition between firms on bribe-seeking behavior of public officials, the impact of corruption on political transitions, and the issues pertaining to empirical modeling and measurement of corruption. In the first chapter, I argue that globalization processes such as international trade and capital mobility are one of the most important causes of corruption. I propose a theory that predicts the inverted U-shaped link between globalization processes and corruption: when a country initially opens to international markets, the level of corruption increases, but at a certain point trend reverses, and corruption starts decreasing. In the second chapter, I investigate the effect of market competition on corruption and argue that higher levels of competition between firms often lead to more corruption opportunities for public officials and, consequently, to more bribe-seeking behavior. In the third chapter, I analyze the effect of corruption on political transitions and argue that, while corruption increases the probability of democratic transition, it simultaneously hurts the chances of democratic consolidation; consequently, autocracies with good governance tend to be stable while highly corrupt countries tend to oscillate between democracy and dictatorship. In the fourth and final chapter, I address problems of measurement and empirical modeling that plague the quantitative analysis of corruption and put forward a number of suggestions that can help to ameliorate some of these issues. I conclude by summarizing main findings and further analyzing their substantive implications.
