The Hebrew infinitive absolute is a liminal form in the language, often taking the place of other forms. In the past the infinitive absolute was understood as an emphasizing form, used because the author was in a hurry or simply wanted to change the style of writing. However, developments in the disciplines of discourse analysis and rhetorical criticism have shown that every choice of verbal form is significant. This study endeavors to show that the employment of the Hebrew infinitive absolute is no different. Focusing on the fifty-four infinitives absolute in Deuteronomy, this inquiry places each occurrence of an infinitive within a particular discourse-rhetorical web.
