This study presents an essential need to include words in the curricula that are easily perceived and are known as Spanish-English cognates, which are words that are the same or nearly the same orthographically, phonologically and semantically between Spanish and English. The purpose of this study was to examine Spanish-English cognate orthographic transparency on differentiating English-Spanish cognates from non-cognates. The eight research questions guiding this three-experiment study follow the same parallel structure of the two following questions: Will students learn to differentiate between the cognate words and non-cognate words during the learning trials when presented with high transparency cognates than when presented with low transparency cognates? And will students learn to differentiate between cognate words and non-cognate words during the memory trials when presented with high transparency cognates than when presented with low transparency cognates? The studies represent a quantitative approach to examine the effect cognate orthographic transparency on fifth- and sixth-grade Spanish- English emergent bilingual students.
