Pragmatic Constraints of αλλα in the Synoptic Gospels This dissertation is a study of the use of the conjunction αλλα within the Synoptic Gospels. The aims in this research have been (1) to identify each of the constructions in which αλλα appears within the Synoptics, beginning with the Gospel of Matthew; (2) to identify and examine the arrangement of the elements associated with αλλα within each construction; (3) to inductively determine the most common patterns for these arrangements; (4) to classify the various constructions according to their respective arrangements; and (5) to determine the functions generally associated with each of these patterns. This final step has opened the way to propose exegetical explanations for why a writer might have chosen one arrangement in a particular context while passing over other options, as well as why the writer chose, in some instances, to deviate from the base patterns available. Four major patterns (with some sub-patterns) are proposed to explain the variety of arrangements found within the Synoptics, and the relative frequency with which these patterns appear in the various Gospels is discussed. An appeal to the linguistic phenomenon known as "metalinguistic negation" is made in order to explain such instances as Matthew 10:20 and Mark 9:37. Finally, it has been demonstrated that most occurrences of in the Synoptics, and especially in the sayings of Jesus, are in the context of a previous negation, such that either something from a previous utterance is being corrected, or two utterances are being contrasted in some way.
