The process of writing this thesis was an interesting experience, as it concerns a topic which is prominent of French society today, in everyday life. The topic of this thesis was therefore interesting to work on, and individuals living in France can easily be exposed to. The methodology here was based on academic research of theorists, books, articles, data collecting, and official surveys on the topic.This thesis aims to identify and discuss the different elements which participated in the formation of racism in France. The current state of racism, as related to islamophobia and nationalism in France will be examined, in order to determine how it is has evolved over time. In order to do so, elements of history such as the implementation of laicite and secular cultural values will be observed. The history of migration flows in France and colonization will also require attention, as to reveal the surfacing of racist ideals concerning "the other", and cultural and social differentiations. Additionally, the recent terrorist events that took place in France and Europe will also be studied, as to understand the impact they may have had on the French population's fears towards immigration and Muslim populations as potential threats to safety and cultural values. Finally, racism as a political tool will also be investigated, as to unveil the impact of French political movements on the mindset of the French population.In conclusion of this thesis, to say that racism in France has increased drastically over recent years would be inaccurate. It seems that France is in a decisive stage in which it has yet to determine whether it will let elements such as terrorism, political segregation, and the evolution of its republic values affect its views on populations of immigrant and/or Muslim origins.
