The ongoing conflict in Syria is a source of continuing violence, including the use of chemical weapons. The Obama and Trump administrations both put forward messages that attempted to frame the conflict as a threat. The purpose of this study is to analyze the responses of the two administrations to instances of chemical weapons use in Syria through the theoretical framework of securitization theory. To accomplish this goal, this study critically considers both the specific context and rhetoric of the administrations. Additionally, this study applies the conclusions drawn from the comparison of the administrations to challenge existing theorizations of securitization.
