Thesis (M.A.)--Clark University, 2018.

This thesis explores the Christian faith of Jimmy Carter and its influence on his foreign policy during his time in office. Beginning with a general overview of the literature surrounding the 39th President, this thesis notes that Carter's Christian faith has not received attention due to its rather amorphous nature and the difficulty it presents in handling his policies. However, utilizing the dual pursuit of peace and justice, this thesis contends that Carter's Christian faith shaped his foreign policy and decision making. Using his rhetoric, his commitment to human rights, and his policies towards Africa, this thesis unravels the deeply personal and influential nature of Carter's Christian faith through his policies and decisions while in office. Carter's continued publications provide a unique juxtaposition to the focus and research of historians as Carter continues to focus on his faith while many authors fail to recognize it. The result is that this thesis calls for the continued and unabashed efforts of those working on the intersection of religion and politics as the field continues to emerge.
