The purpose of this quantitative descriptive study was to describe how IT leaders, IT managers, and IT staff perceived the importance of soft skills, managerial skills, and practical skills, and if there may be differences between the three position groups in their perception of the importance of their soft skills, managerial skills, practical skills or skills overall for success in their current position group in higher education worldwide. It was not known how these five variables differed from one another. The study was built upon John Kotter's Management and Leadership Theory and The Theory of Information Technology (IT) Professional Competence, which defined the variables for the study. The EDUCAUSE Center for Analysis and Research provided archival data, which was an international sample of 1,188 IT professionals collected from a digital survey. The research questions asked if there was a perceived difference between IT leaders, IT managers, and IT staff and soft, managerial, and practical skills and skills overall. Descriptive statistics showed an order of importance for self-rated skills: IT leaders: soft, managerial, practical; IT managers: soft, practical, managerial; IT staff: soft, practical, managerial. A one-way MANOVA demonstrated a statistically significant difference between the groups on the combined dependent variable of skills for success, F(6, 2164) = 89.21, p < .001 and a one-way ANOVA demonstrated a significant difference between IT leaders, IT managers, and IT staff in their perception of the importance of their skills overall for success at their position group in higher education, F(2, 1085) = 141.79, p < .001. These skills are important to consider in the workplace.
