Significant warming has occurred in Antarctic Peninsula (AP), which caused enhanced surface melting particularly along the east side of AP. The warming and enhanced melting is partially attributed to the local mesoscale wind system - foehn wind. In this study, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model forced by the ERA-Interim reanalysis is used to simulate the foehn wind warming in AP. In order to efficiently configure WRF study domain for modeling the foehn wind warming in AP, sensitivity simulations of double (10km-2km) vs. triple (50km-10km-2km) nesting are first compared. The comparison suggests that a double nesting domain setup is sufficient to conduct the study. Then the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) schemes within WRF are tested for the study area through three sensitivity simulations in which PBL schemes of Mellor-Yamada-Janjic (MYJ), Yonsei University (YSU) and the Asymmetric Convection Model 2 (ACM) are compared. The results suggest that three PBL schemes show similar performance for the study area though MYJ performs slightly better when verified against the MODIS surface temperatures. Then an in-house configured WRF model with double nesting (10km-2km) and MYJ as the PBL scheme is used to study the foehn wind warming in AP. Two case studies are conducted in which the weather systems that produce the foehn wind events are two cyclones that move towards the study area of AP in Janurary 2006. WRF well captures the flow of the cyclonic systems and the resultant foehn wind warming. The warming extent on the leeward side of AP - Larsen C Ice Shelf varies with the incoming air, when the incoming air is warmer, the leeward warming extent is greater, and near surface temperature at the Larsen C Ice Shelf can be as high as 8-10 °C in January 2006, suggesting that the foehn wind warming may be an important contributing factor resulting in recent crack and breakup in Larsen C Ice Shelf.
