This thesis examines the role of ENSO teleconnections as a source of hydroclimatic variability over important headwater basins spanning the continental divide in Wyoming, with emphasis on the differences in seasonal response over high and low elevations in each basin, through both a nonparametric comparison of precipitation totals, and a process-based composite-anomaly analysis of the atmospheric controls behind observed precipitation anomalies. The results reveal a relationship between strong ENSO events and precipitation over the study region that is most evident during the preceding fall, where composite anomalies of precipitation follow those of moisture availability in the lower troposphere, and winter, where anomalies are focused over mountainous terrain. These findings underscore how ENSO teleconnections interact with the seasonal progression of regional precipitation regimes to influence hydroclimate western U.S. Consequently, precipitation response over the study basins exhibits a large degree of interseasonal variability, with important implications for water supply.
