This dissertation seeks to expand communication scholarship by merging involvement (parasocial interaction and identification) and signification literature to analyze the influential power of the celebrity Steve Harvey in the post-literate age, driven by modern communication technology. Steve Harvey is ideal for this study because he is both a celebrity, and he frequently signifies by using Black dialect, or African-American vernacular, in front of diverse audiences across various communication mediums. The unique characteristics of Harvey's public persona are analyzed to gain an understanding of his social causes, communication tactics, and overall image. A thorough review of involvement and signification scholarship guided the research question and hypotheses in this study, which were addressed using quantitative methods. More specifically, an electronic survey disseminated over Amazon Mechanical Turk generated research data from a random sample of 398 participants with diverse backgrounds. Several different types of analyses were employed to examine the dataset including frequency descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation, regression, and Hayes (2018) PROCESS macro test. The results showed that media exposure to Harvey, through television, radio, social media and books combined, indirectly influenced positive attitudes toward signification among the participants through parasocial interaction followed by identification, despite ethnicity. Also, the results from an ANOVA test revealed that political orientation was significantly associated with involvement with Harvey. Comprehensive tables and a figure found throughout Chapter 4 summarize data findings such as the aforementioned ones.
