The purpose of the study was to determine the percentage of Intermediate Nutmeg Award Nominees that qualify for the High Interest/ Low Level (hi-lo) book designation. This study will determine if a Nutmeg Nominee book, already recognized as high interest through the Nutmeg Committee selection process, can be categorized as a "hi-lo" book for struggling readers using research based criteria. Each year, ten books are selected for each category of nominees (Elementary, Intermediate, Middle and High). The books are then read by students across the state of Connecticut and voted on to find one winner in each category. A sample of Nutmeg Nominees in the Intermediate category were examined in this study for characteristics that qualify them as having a "low" designation in addition to the high interest characteristics established by the selection process that would provide the other half of a "hi-lo" book selection. "Only one-third of eighth-grade students in the U.S. read at or above the proficient level" (Maughan, 2012). Many students in the upper elementary, middle and high school grades are struggling to read and find books that can suit their individual reading level needs. A hi-lo book is a text that has a high level of interest for a reader, however, the reading level of the book and decodability is on a lower level. This can be determined using Lexile and grade level information along with specific characteristics that each book contains. The results of this study were that 33% of the sample of Intermediate Nutmeg Nominees in examined qualify as a hi-lo book for readers in grades 4-6.
