Tolstoy discovered innovative narrative techniques throughout his literary career that do not rely on personhood. Impersonal structures, rather, govern the plots of his most innovative works. This structural phenomenon is linked with Tolstoy's moral thought, which he strives to transmit in narrative form. I investigate his "impersonal project" beginning with his early experiments and culminating with his posthumously published work "The Forged Coupon.".Subjects--Topical Terms:
