In addressing the Youth Sports industry, minimal leadership training is conducted except for what is included in a course that youth sports governing organizations require their member sport leaders to complete. Most youth sports leadership training is geared towards how to better develop younger athletes to win games. With USA Basketball, their Gold- and Associates-level Coach licensing courses focus primarily on leadership training by way of coaches motivating players to develop their skills on the court based on physical developmental level and age. However, there is no component of the courses that concentrates on helping leadership develop the ethical side of their responsibilities. The problem is finding leaders who exemplify ethical leadership when instances of unethical behaviors have become commonplace and result in benefits. The lack of Ethics and Servant Leadership trainings are contributors to this problem. The purpose of this qualitative collective case study was to discover if sports coaches desire to complete both Ethics and Servant Leadership trainings in order to improve ethical and leadership behaviors and actions. Three hundred and ninety-six USA Basketball Certified Youth Development Gold- and Associate-level coaches completed an online survey questionnaire. The research questions addressed whether coaches wanted to complete both Ethics and Servant Leadership trainings and whether a new business ethic could be created from applying both trainings to sports leadership development. The results of the study were: (a) coaches now deem USA Basketball as the governing authority of Youth Basketball in the United States, superseding the Amateur Athletic Union and Jr. NBA, (b) coaches agreed that there is a need for both Ethics and Servant Leadership trainings, and (c) a new business ethic can be created from applying Ethics and Servant Leadership trainings to sports leadership development. Future research can be conducted as to whether behavioral improvement occurred due to both Servant Leadership and Ethics trainings at the individual program level with leadership versus overall behavioral improvements of USA Basketball Certified Youth Development licensed coaches, with a comparison of individual programs in regards to behavioral improvements, or, coaches can be studied in relation to behavioral improvements from local to global levels.
