The benefits of physical activity (PA) are well-documented for older adults living in long term care facilities, yet participation in PA programs within these facilities remains low. Exercise, seen as a subset of physical activity, may be defined as physical activity that is planned and structured for the general purpose of improving or maintaining capabilities. For this study, the term physical activity is used to describe the intervention, FUNctional Movement. FUNctional Movement, a supplemental facilitator training, was introduced to an existing Bingocize® health promotion program that combines the familiar game of bingo with therapeutic movements. FUNctional Movement targets facilitator provided autonomy support and enjoyment enhancement thereby positively affecting PA participation in older adults living in long term care facilities. The purpose of this three-paper format dissertation was to collectively evaluate perceptions of FUNctional Movement from two key constituents: the facilitators who received the training and the older adults who received the intervention. Paper one used focus groups and sought to understand the affective experiences of older adults who participated in the FUNctional Movement program. Paper 2 explored how participation in FUNctional Movement affected facilitator knowledge content, perceptions of fun, enjoyment and autonomy support in physical activity as facilitators prepared to implement the Bingocize® program using a mixed-methods approach. Paper three surveyed older adult participants and examined the relationship between levels of enjoyment and perceived autonomy support of older adult FUNctional Movement participants as compared to participants in the standard Bingocize® program. Using a randomized cluster design, differences between older adult FUNctional Movement participants (experimental condition) as compared to participants in the standard Bingocize® program (control condition) were also investigated. Findings suggest positive affective experiences for both the facilitators and older adults participating in the FUNctional Movement supplemental facilitator training.
