El Cabrero, le chant de la sierra is a documentary shot in 1988 that presents the daily life and the artistic process of Jose Dominguez Munoz, a flamenco singer known as El Cabrero. Despite appreciating flamenco culture and tradition, Spanish public television never broadcasted the film. To discover why it was rejected, this essay analyzes the space that an artist such as El Cabrero occupies in the cultural flamenco scene, and the historical context of public television in Spain during the 1980s. El Cabrero is an unusual singer because he uses flamenco as a tool of political protest and vindication. His lyrics reflect the socio-economic inequalities in the Andalusian region. Moreover, the historiography of public television in Spain shows the organic dependence between the state and the medium and points out its exploitation as an ideological platform. By means of editing, El Cabrero, le chant de la sierra exposes two main ideological plots. On the one hand, the film builds connections between the singer's statements in an interview and the lyrics of his songs, enhancing the political aspect of his music; on the other hand, the documentary shows the protest of Marinaleda for socializing the land, revealing the communist ideology of this little Andalusian village. Therefore, as a whole, the ideological charge of the film clashed with the interests of the political party in power: both, the artist and Marinaleda, undermine the status quo and represent a direct ideological competence of socialism. That is why El Cabrero, le chant de la sierra was never broadcasted in Spanish public television.
