The Spanish State's democratization in the late 1970s has been heralded as a success story in the global spread of liberal democratic capitalism and is often held as a model for nation-states moving from authoritarian forms of government to liberal democratic institutions. However, despite its successes, the Transicion-as the democratization process has come to be known-has a more ambivalent legacy than its defenders tend to admit. Deeply conditioned by the repression carried out by Francisco Franco's dictatorial regime, the Transicion was a "thin" democratization, which inaugurated a system of government that limited participation and the possibility for change. These limits are found in both the structures that were set up at the time, as well as within the public culture it initiated. At the heart of the Transicion and its public memory are rhetorical processes that deeply shape the way democracy is defined.
