This thesis explores the potential mental health benefits of using wilderness therapy as a modern-day rite of passage or initiation ritual for adolescents. Through the use of hermeneutic and alchemical hermeneutic research methodologies, this thesis describes initiation as a fundamental developmental need for teens and states how wilderness therapy satisfies the phases of initiation. This work asserts that if there are no formalized cultural initiation rituals set in place, teens will attempt to self-initiate, often in dangerous ways. The mental health benefits of connecting with nature through wilderness therapy is also investigated. This thesis argues that wilderness therapy could fulfill the Western cultural void of initiation rituals for young people. If made more accessible, wilderness therapy could offer a way to safely support adolescents in their transition from childhood to adulthood.
