Previous research has suggested that dance and movement can be a useful channel for psychological growth and healing. Dance is an expressive art form which interconnects the mind and body. Despite this interconnection, there are limited ways of evaluating the use of movements or dance in psychotherapy. Part of that is due to the methodological difficulties of making dance movements replicable and universal for research purposes. This qualitative study was designed to explore the effects of dance on affect regulation. Due to the limitations of only using verbal data to qualify affect regulation, this study also looked at the non-verbal expression of affect through a novel coding process of evaluating movement and tying it to affect expression. The findings of the study suggest that there is a positive correlation between dance and affect regulation.
