Due to economical, social, and technological advances over the last two decades, creativity is no longer considered a "gift" but an essential tool in 21st century educational and occupational settings. The Creativity Crisis is a call of action for schools to invest in creativity development. Art integration (AI) is a creative approach to teaching in which the arts are instruments connecting academic disciplines to art forms meeting objectives in both. In 2008, President Barack Obama declared his advocacy for the arts and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education in America by reinvesting in creativity and innovation as well as science and technology. The purpose of this study was to analyze arts integration as an effective creative pedagogy and examine the impact of arts integration through a STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) on student learning in a Southwestern Tennessee middle school. This study compared academic achievement of a one sample population before and after receiving arts integration by means of a STEAM instructional model within three middle school subjects: Reading, Mathematics, and Science. Finally, this study analyzed students' learning as measured by the Discovery Education Assessment scores in Reading, Mathematics, and Science among all three subjects and two grade levels (6th and 7th grades) after the first year of arts integration implementation within a middle school STEAM education program. Results showed through arts integration, academic achievement by means of Discovery Education Assessment scores did increase in Reading and Science; however there was no difference in Mathematics scores. The means effect for grade and subject did indicate a significant difference on Discovery Education Assessment scores, but the interactive effect yielded no significant difference. Further implications of the results are discussed.
