In the art world there is a controversial topic that is not often discussed: the separation between what is defined as craft and what is esteemed as fine art. Craft and fine art have experienced inarguable differences in marketing and prices that has been felt strongly since the beginning of the Arts and Crafts movement of the end of the 19th century. Throughout the 20th century, however, there has been a notable shift towards a grander appreciation of contemporary ceramics beyond the clay world as, to some critics, potters and sculptors have become synonymous. By cataloguing a roadmap of artist examples and testimonies, an understanding of the historic distinctions can be made. Furthermore, the shift towards blending the worlds will be explored and the reasoning behind contemporary artists turning towards clay with enhanced vigor in today's market.
