Studies on doctoral level clinical/counseling psychology students' professional quality of life (QOL) in practicum placements have been limited. The purpose of this study was to determine whether self-care mitigates the negative or increases the positive benefits for doctoral students training in the helping profession. This study investigated effects of self-care (SC) on professional QOL of doctoral students' in practicum placements in the context of daily hassles (DH) and the level of supervisory support (SS) received at practicum placements. The current study discovered that SS was positively associated with Compassion Satisfaction (CS) and negatively associated with Burnout (BO) when controlling for program year, and DH positively associated with Compassion Fatigue (CF) when controlling for working with suicidal clients. When measuring the magnitude of the linear relationship between SS and professional QOL, and DH and professional QOL controlling for demographic variables, the relationship between SS and BO was stronger than the relationship between SS and CF. Additionally the linear relationship between DH and CF was stronger than with CS, and the relationship between daily hassles and BO was stronger than with CS. This study included a sample of 95 PsyD and PhD psychology students between first and fifth year of academics in practicum placements. The participants completed an online survey consisting of a demographic questionnaire, Professional QOL-V Scale, Daily Hassles, Survey of Perceived Supervisory Support, and Self-Care Assessment Worksheet. The three subscales of professional QOL are CS, CF, and BO. In addition to professional QOL, physical self-care was negatively associated to DH when controlling for practicum hours. This study determined the importance of detecting early manifestations of professional QOL and additional factors including DH, SS, and SC which may enhance or affect a doctoral student's professional QOL. Results indicate the importance of SS at practicum placement and the ability to deal with inherent stressors of academics, practicum placements, and personal life. Given the multitude of findings, future research including case load at school and practicum placement, competency levels in the field, and doctoral student stressors may help detect early manifestations of positive and negative components of professional QOL.
