Managing the everyday challenges associated with improving student achievement, is often combatted with student attendance. Poor attendance has proven to be an early warning sign that schools are not meeting the social and emotional needs of the students. Unfortunately, student attendance is determined by internal and external forces. Moreover, when school-oriented barriers exist; such as a poor school climate and problematic student absenteeism; chronic absenteeism is prevalent. Chronic absenteeism has become a critical public health issue, which previous research has shown in the school year 2015, over 6.5 million students were chronically absent. Subsequently, that equates to every ten (10) students, missed at least three weeks of school during the 2013-2015 school years. The purpose of this study is to identify possible factors, which contributes to the alarming rate of chronic absenteeism among middle school students. The methodology most suitable for exploring the relationships between school climate and chronic absenteeism was a quantitative correlational design. The utilization of a correctional design, to analyze the relationship between numerical data; was to examine the correlation between school climate and students exhibiting chronic absenteeism. As such, the researcher examined the consequences of an unsafe school environment and the effects of chronic absenteeism. The research question was addressed by performing an inferential analysis to determine whether the data set met the assumptions required for the univariate regression procedure. Several tests were performed, such as the assumptions of normality, linearity, homoscedasticity, and multicollinearity, to address the research question. The study used data from 12 schools over four years of school term provided by the Georgia Department of Education and The Governor's Office of Student Achievement. Secondary data was used to examine middle school students, which consisted of students in 6th through 8th grade; based on students' anonymous response to the Georgia Student Health Survey. Georgia Student Health Survey, which was created by the Georgia Department of Education, identifies the star rating of middle schools in the metropolitan Atlanta area, which 70% of the schools are represented. This study used data on middle schools specifically for 2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017, which out of the 23 middle schools; only 12 middle schools had completed data for the four consecutive years. The outcome showed that all Shapiro-Wilk values were higher than .05, which is favorable for school climate including norms and values, which support students' feeling socially and emotionally safe in school. Interpretation of these results contains a normative component that the school climate rating system should positively correlate with absence from school. This study showed that in two of the four years, school attendance did have a significant relationship with school climate. Recommendation from this study has led to questioning the methodology behind Georgia's Climate Star Rating System. Providing a safe school environment could decrease the likelihood of chronic absenteeism among students. The results of this study have shown by identifying and examining possible factors, which contributes to chronic absenteeism among middle school students is paramount.
