Human service organizations have traditionally served as the foundation for providing materials and resources necessary for economic growth and security in the stabilization of individuals, families, and communities. The Black church has been known as a stabilizing factor in sustaining its communities by providing a gamut of social services in addition to its religious and spiritual traditions. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of eldercare human service providers' working with Black churches to provide social services. The ecological systems theory was used to guide the study. A phenomenological methodology design was used for data collection and analysis. Eight participants were selected for the study and described their experiences as eldercare human service providers'. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews with analysis revealing six emergent themes, which included (a) feeling compelled and motivated to help others; (b) intense attachment to clients; (c) spiritual connection that was therapeutic; (d) appreciation of clients spiritual/religious identities; (e) alarmed by clients' lack of healthcare literacy; and (f) personal cultural awareness increased provider/client bonding. The participants described the mission of human services, the importance of spirituality in their personal and professional lives, challenges associated with lacking or misinformed healthcare information, and the relevance of human service and church partnerships. This research study adds to the body of knowledge about eldercare human service providers' lived experiences working with Black churches and gives insight into how social services and religion can mutually intersect in communities of color. Future research might investigate the process of eldercare human service delivery in suburban churches.
