Left unacknowledged, unprocessed, and untreated secondary trauma and its deleterious effects pose an occupational hazard to mental health professionals and their clients (Figley, 1995a, Pearlman & Saakvitne, 1995a). However the prevalence of secondary traumatic stress (STS) remains largely unexamined in mental health professionals who work with juvenile justice involved youth. Through a mixed-methods design, this study explores how a mental health professional's exposure to adverse experiences may influence their clinical impressions & recommendations for youth in their care through exploration of clinical experiences and recommendations, adverse childhood experiences, STS, and self-care. This study aims to provide crucial insights and understanding into secondary trauma and in turn, aid in the prevention of a continuous traumatic cycle for staff and youth alike through provision of clinical, systemic, and research implications in juvenile justice practice.
