Muqarnas is known as a traditional structural element of Islamic Architecture. This vault-like structure slightly resembles stalactite formations, and its utilization is ubiquitous in mosques and mausoleums belonging to Muslim culture. The Islamic Arab societies have unique system of attitudes, beliefs and values which has become a traditional expression over the period of time. This traditional expression has been expressed through architecture, art, community design, social institutions and behaviors. All these attributes form a unique and special patterns. There have been numerous publications on Islamic and Arab architectures and these attempts have expressively demonstrated through the conversation of significant historical buildings, museums. However, less attention is paid to the muqarnas. Contemporary architecture of muqarnas in Doha, Qatar is a conspicuous objective of my research. The purpose I chose Muqarnas as my thesis topic is my attraction towards muqarnas since my childhood. I have come across many muqanras in turkey, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and Syria but rarely found any in Qatar. The memories are still entrenched in my mind. Those are permanent memories. Museums are very important in society. During my course work, I found this opportunity to work on muqarnas as it is unique architectural decorative element by Muslims architect and builders. The best thing I liked about the muqarnas is a) it can be carved as structural blocks of corbelled vaulting, and b) it can be hung from structural roof as a purely decorative surface. Moreover, I believe that Muqarnas have great importance in Islamic architecture as it represents the ornamental form of Islamic ideology. The different units of dome shows the complex creation of universe and ultimately the creator, God himself.
