Many elementary children have low performance in reading and there is a need to help close the performance gap among these students. The goal of the mixed method approach was to examine the effectiveness of a balanced literacy program in improving literacy performance of elementary students in grade K-5 and teachers' (N = 10) perceptions of the implementation and evaluation of the program. This mixed methods study was based on a cognitive and social theoretical framework. The study is a mixed study, using a quantitative descriptive survey research with open-ended questions designed to gain insight into teachers' perspectives about the effectiveness of a balanced literacy approach. Teachers promoted literacy by facilitating learning experiences whereby students acquire knowledge and skills to read aloud and to use literacy stations; as well as providing positive feedback to build confidence among students. In addition, professional development is a crucial aspect of preparing to effectively implement the balanced literacy approach. Further study related to technology and professional development was recommended.
