With the general population aging in the United States, alongside obesity levels rising as well, TKA surgeries are becoming increasingly prevalent. Many studiescite lack of satisfaction after TKA intervention. Post-surgery, it is common for patients to experience amounts of pain as well as limited range of motion as the knee begins the healing process. Persistent pain and a lack of expected range of motion within the affected knee often lead to dissatisfied patient outcomes. An accurate representation of our day-to-day movement patterns is essential to understanding how adults truly move every day. Incorporating realistic everyday environments is important when considering measurements of variability, as these measurements focus on understanding the natural variability present in walking. Nonlinear analyses, particularly Lyapunov exponents, have been used ina number of previous studies concerning variability. However, nonlinear analyseshave yet to be used to understand the kinematic differences seen in walking when comparing healthy young adults and healthy elderly. Examination of healthy older and young adults will help examination of deficiencies seen during TKA gait.
