This qualitative collective case study identified the tools and techniques used by "highly-qualified" teachers in their live-virtual classroom environment. Data was collected from semi-structured, one-on-one interviews conducted with a purposeful sample of twelve identified "highly-qualified" teachers at a Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School that administered mandatory online synchronous class sessions. Additional data was collected through observations of each participant in their recorded archived "synchronous live" class sessions. The interviews and observations were coded, resulting in seven identified themes within the study. The results of the study uncovered from the themes detailed the use of formative assessment, collaboration and techniques, and cooperative learning techniques that supports learning theory, transactional distance theory and the use of community for inquiry format. The results also allowed for implications to be made for pre-service training in education programs. Pre-service teachers need to be prepared for, and equipped with, the various tools and techniques that compose the online synchronous teaching environment which requires coordination and skills beyond the traditional classroom.
