Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is an unexpected condition causing the heart to stop beating and is the leading medical cause of death in young athletes. Gaining insight into coaches' perceptions to successfully delivering emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is important to victim survival during an SCA event. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of CPR training environment and testing methods on athletic coach CPR self-efficacy, which is an individual's belief that they can properly perform CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) during a SCA incident. Participants completed an online questionnaire regarding their self-efficacy to perform CPR, knowledge of SCA symptoms and appropriate response actions, and CPR training. Results showed that a classroom setting of 11 or more students significantly increased CPR self-efficacy when compared to an online setting (p = .04) and that testing method involving the combination of skill demonstration accompanied with a written test significantly increased CPR self-efficacy compared to skill demonstration and computerized testing ( p < .001). These findings have important implications in how athletic coaches receive CPR training and in maximizing their CPR self-efficacy.
