In this dissertation, we study the dynamics of nematic liquid crystals, especially dynamic instabilities owing to various mechanisms. The model under consideration is the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system, which is a coupled system between harmonic map heat flow and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. There are two folds in this thesis. Firstly, inspired by the work of Gallay and Wayne on incompressible Navier-Stokes equation, we first establish the wellposedness with L1-initial vorticity and aim at investigating the influence of Oseen vortices in liquid crystals. In particular, for two dimensional case, we gain a rotation instability due to the pulling of the fluid; And in three dimension, Oseen vortices plays a minor role, a concentration instability happens due to a twist effect of the director field into the third dimension. Secondly, we study the instability induced by external magnetic field, which is the so-called Freedericksz transition. More precisely, under strong anchoring boundary condition, when the strength of the magnetic field exceeds a threshold, the director field tends to align along the field; Otherwise it is undeformed.
