Chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV) induces immunosuppression in chickens. This virus is considered ubiquitous in nature and has been reported to be present in many commercial poultry farms all over the world causing severe economic losses to poultry industry. The acute infection is characterized by anemia, that is directly associated with atrophy of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues; subcutaneous and intramuscular hemorrhages and increased mortality. To date, 21 independent CIAV isolates from Northwest Arkansas have been obtained from broiler breeder replacement pullets ranging in age from 7 days to 18 weeks. This research was conducted with an objective to characterize these CIAV isolates from chickens in Northwest Arkansas with respect to their ability to induce pathogenesis in vitro and in vivo.
