Grass shrimp are aquatic crustaceans and hosts to the trematode Microphallus turgidus, the hyperparasite Urosporidium crescens, and the isopod Probopyrus pandalicola. The purpose of the present study was to determine if there was a tidal and/or seasonal effect on the abundance of the grass shrimp Palaemon pugio and P. vulgaris, and potential seasonal variation in the numbers of M. turgidus, U. crescens, and P. pandalicola in grass shrimp. Grass shrimp were collected at high and low tide at Country Club Creek near Savannah, GA. Palaemon pugio was significantly more abundant at low tide (11.3±4.2) than at high tide (5.0±4.4). Trematode abundance in P. pugio was significantly lower in the winter (7.0±8.9 trematodes) than in the spring (22.3±14.2) and summer (22.1±18.1). The variability in shrimp and parasite numbers could indicate species-specific requirements by different parasite species. Host-parasite interactions could help shape ecological processes occurring in estuaries and at different trophic levels.
