Reservation work relief programs "are not just a fund for employing Indians in these depressed years. They are (or could be, and must be) the means of laying a broad and intelligently conceived foundation for permanent Indian life. Let each of us make this task our own." This quote shows how instrumental laboring is to integrate people into the body politic of American society. It appeared in Indians at Work, published by the Office of Indian Affairs, later called the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and sometimes the Indian Service, which highlighted the activities of work relief programs on Indian reservations across the western United States. This thesis examines this newsletter, and asks, what did Indians at Work convey about different kinds of Indian work relief? I argue that through land, health, arts and crafts and patriotic work, in Indians at Work conveyed the contradictory narrative of the Indian New Deal.
