The Problem The Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia (SBCV) is a network of over seven hundred churches. Since its beginning in 1996, the SBCV has assisted local churches in planting two hundred sixty-three SBCV churches. One-third of SBCV churches have participated in a church planting partnership since 1996. Eighteen percent of SBCV churches are currently participating in church planting partnerships to plant churches whether in Virginia or around the globe. The SBCV exists to strengthen and mobilize churches to make disciples and plant churches through gospel partnerships. The network aspires to the missiological premise of churches planting churches and reflects this premise throughout its church planting process and systems. The church planting team at the SBCV desires to assist one hundred percent of its member churches to participate in church planting, believing that church planting is a required element to great commission obedience. The SBCV desires to not only increase the participation rate of churches planting churches, but also the qualitative nature of church planting partnerships. The outcome of healthy church planting partnerships should include increased health for the sponsoring church as well as planting a healthy reproducing church. The ministry project was designed to discover the best practices of SBCV church planting partnerships over its twenty-year history. Forty-nine church plants met a list of nine criteria that defined the kind of church that SBCV partnering churches would desire to plant. The project director surveyed the pastors of the partnering churches involved in planting the forty-nine churches along with the church planters to discover sponsoring practices that most contributed to planting a healthy church. The project director then compiled and placed the results of the survey in a guide designed to equip pastors to lead their churches to participate in church planting partnerships, and to partner in a manner that results in planting healthy churches. Survey respondents submitted forty-two individual practices they determined contributed to planting healthy churches. The project director divided the practices into seven categories. He then asked respondents to prioritize the activities in each category and then prioritize the order of the categories. Respondents selected the category of prayer as the most important category, and further selected praying for the church planter and his family as the most beneficial practice in the category. Respondents selected the category of financial support as the second most important category, and further selected financial support for the church planter as the most beneficial practice in the category. Finally, respondents selected the category of leadership training, nurture, and support of the church planter as the third most important category, and further selected providing regular mentoring and coaching as the most beneficial practice in the category. The project includes descriptions of all seven categories and forty-two activities.
